About Hands Design Collective
Who are we?
Hands Design Collective is the original love child of Sarah Jane Barnhoorn. With her big heart she created platforms for other people’s creativity to flourish and alongside her a community of woman grew into a collective. From a small seed in 2012 the collective has grown to support 23 local designers, taking their unique products from strength to strength.
The Collective has many functions; firstly we have a beautiful shop in Knysna that serves as a showcase for our unique handcrafted products. On site we also have a small workshop space where some of our products are made and where people can collaborate directly with our affiliated crafters. Hands creates opportunities for its members by exposing them to different markets, through national exhibits, through our website and through ongoing mentoring. We offer skills training such as beading, sewing and product development. We find women with talent and support each other along the journey of creating abundance through beauty and creativity. Social upliftment, more jobs for women and seeing people in a small economy make a living from their skills are our goals.
The most important thing about HANDS is that we want to do our work in a very real way. We want to form relationships with those we work with. We want to have real connections and a real impact. This means that we’re having to start off small, but it doesn’t mean that there’s anything stopping us from dreaming really big – Sarah Jane Barnhoorn 1980 – 2015
